    ELISA detection of phenazepam, etizolam, pyrazolam, flubromazepam, diclazepam and delorazepam in blood using Immunalysis® benzodiazepine kit

    Phenazepam and etizolam were the first uncontrolled benzodiazepines available for sale in the UK. Pyrazolam, flubromazepam and diclazepam are not used medicinally anywhere in the world; they are produced exclusively for the uncontrolled, recreational market. It is important to know whether potentially abused drugs like these can be detected in routine toxicological screening tests. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether the Immunalysis® Benzodiazepines ELISA kit could detect phenazepam, etizolam, pyrazolam, flubromazepam, diclazepam and its metabolite delorazepam. Their cross-reactivity was assessed by comparing the absorbance of the drug with that of oxazepam, the reference standard. This study found that these uncontrolled benzodiazepines cross-react sufficiently to produce a positive result with the Immunalysis® Benzodiazepine ELISA kit. Cross-reactivity ranged from 79 to 107% for phenazepam, etizolam, pyrazolam, flubromazepam, diclazepam and delorazepam fortified into blood. The results show that it is possible to detect these newer benzodiazepines with traditional forensic toxicology laboratory tools and it is important to include these benzodiazepines in the confirmation tests

    All secant varieties of the Chow variety are nondefective for cubics and quaternary forms

    The Chow rank of a form is the length of its smallest decomposition into a sum of products of linear forms. For a generic form, this corresponds to finding the smallest secant variety of the Chow variety which fills the ambient space. We determine the Chow rank of generic cubics and quaternary forms by proving nondefectivity of all involved secant varieties. The main new ingredient in our proof is the generalization of a technique by [Brambilla and Ottaviani, On the Alexander--Hirschowitz theorem, J. Pure Appl. Algebra, 2008] that consists of employing Terracini's lemma and Newton's backward difference formula to compute the dimensions of secant varieties of arbitrary projective varieties. Via this inductive construction, the proof of nondefectivity ultimately reduces to proving a number of base cases. These are settled via a computer-assisted proof because of the large dimensions of the spaces involved. The largest base case required in our proof consisted of computing the dimension of a vector space constructed from the 400400th secant variety of a degree-8282 Chow variety embedded in P98769\mathbb{P}^{98769}.Comment: 21 pages, 1 figur

    Analysis and clinical findings of cases positive for the novel synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonist MDMB-CHMICA

    Context: MDMB-CHMICA is a synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonist which has caused concern due to its presence in cases of adverse reaction and death. Method: 43 cases of suspected synthetic cannabinoid ingestion were identified from patients presenting at an Emergency Department and from post-mortem casework. These were subjected to liquid-liquid extraction using tertiary-butyl methyl ether and quantitatively analysed by Electospray Ionisation Liquid Chromatography – tandem Mass Spectrometry. For positive samples, case and clinical details were sought and interrogated. Results: 11 samples were found positive for MDMB-CHMICA. Concentrations found ranged from <1 – 22 ng/mL (mean: 6 ng/mL, median: 3 ng/mL). The age range was 15 – 44 years (mean: 26 years, median: 21 years), with the majority (82%) of positive results found in males. Clinical presentations included hypothermia, hypoglycaemia, syncope, recurrent vomiting, altered mental state and serotonin toxicity, with corresponding concentrations of MDMB-CHMICA as low as <1 ng/mL. Duration of hospitalisation ranged from 3 – 24 hours (mean: 12 hours, median: 8 hours). Discussion: The concentration range presented in this case series is indicative of MDMB-CHMICA having a high potency, as is known to be the case for other synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonists. The age range and gender representation were consistent with that reported for users of other drugs of this type. The clinical presentations observed were typical of synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonists and show the difficulties in identifying reactions potentially associated with drugs of this type. Conclusion: The range of MDMB-CHMICA concentrations in Emergency Department presentations (n=9) and post-mortem cases (n=2) was reported. No correlation between the concentration of this drug and clinical presentation or cause of death was reported in this sample. However, the potential for harm associated with low concentrations of MDMB-CHMICA and the symptoms of toxicity being non-specific was highlighted

    Formality and informality in the summative assessment of motor vehicle apprentices: a case study

    This article explores the interaction of formal and informal attributes of competence‐based assessment. Specifically, it presents evidence from a small qualitative case study of summative assessment practices for competence‐based qualifications within apprenticeships in the motor industry in England. The data are analysed through applying an adaptation of a framework for exploring the interplay of formality and informality in learning. This analysis reveals informal mentoring as a significant element which influences not only the process of assessment, but also its outcomes. We offer different possible interpretations of the data and their analysis, and conclude that, whichever interpretation is adopted, there appears to be a need for greater capacity‐building for assessors at a local level. This could acknowledge a more holistic role for assessors; recognise the importance of assessors’ informal practices in the formal retention and achievement of apprentices; and enhance awareness of inequalities that may be reinforced by both informal and formal attributes of assessment practices

    Jet heat transfer in the vicinity of a rotating grinding wheel

    Abstract: Impinging jets are known as a method of achieving high convective heat transfer coefficients. One potential application of impinging jet heat transfer is the air jet cooling of a grinding process. A grinding process generates heat that must be dissipated to avoid thermal damage. To date, this has been achieved using flood cooling with a traditional coolant such as an oil and water mixture; however, using a jet of air in its place has obvious environmental and economic benefits. For a range of grinding test configurations, results are presented of the convective heat transfer from the workpiece, along the notional plane of cut, and of the air flow velocity in a two-dimensional plane perpendicular to the workpiece. It has been shown that a boundary layer that develops around the rotating grinding wheel has the effect of displacing a peak in the distribution of the local heat transfer coefficient from the notional arc of cut. To effectively cool the grinding zone, therefore, it is necessary to penetrate this boundary layer and this can only be achieved when the jet velocity is substantially greater than the tangential velocity of the wheel

    The Educational Development Unit have produced a guide to assist academic staff in transforming assessment practices underpinned by technology. 'Assessing with e-Ase' highlights how technology combined with sound pedagogy has the potential to enhance the student experience of learning, teaching and assessment. Drawing on the experiences, knowledge and understanding of the e-assessment project at Middlesex University, it offers a consideration of contextual, procedural and logistical factors that may impact when using e-assessment practices. Key issues for consideration when developing and implementing e-assessment are included along with the part played by policy and strategy. Examples of departmental case studies, an outline of the support available to staff and links to resources that may provide useful additional information are also included
